I think I've produced more bunnies than most real rabbits do! I started by making and stuffing generic bunny bodies from a pattern and then dressing them in heritage linens or embroidered pieces I acquired at flea markets and estate sales.
Sometimes I would personalize them by embroidering names and dates inside the ears to celebrate a birth.
Even more personal were the ones made from family linens like this one I made from a table runner my mother had embroidered.
I made these bunnies from very old and worn quilts that were in our family for generations. I shared then with my sisters and cousins.
I was priviliged to receive a very special request from a woman who owns an art gallery in Yellowknife NWT. She sent me some family linens and her wedding outfit including a pink skirt that had been damaged in storage and asked what I could do. It was an intimidating project and I pondered it for a long time before beginning. A friend of ours (Maurice Girard) provided the spark by suggesting the pink material be used inside the bunny ears. I was able to recover enough material for seven bunnies which she divided among her family. Two of them were reserved for her delightful daughters:
Some time later she sent a picture showing how she had added some detail and made a family link that spanned 98 years. Heady stuff.
